Floriana avoided another drubbing at the hands of AEK Larnaca yesterday.
After last week's humiliating 8-0 defeat at the Hibs Stadium, Floriana were looking to restore some lost pride with an improved performance at GSK Stadium.
Michael Woods' men offered a stronger challenge to AEK Larnaca who still managed to carve out a 1-0 win, courtesy of a first-half goal from Kyriakos Pavlou, to progress to the next round 9-0 on aggregate.
AEK Larnaca's opponents in the third qualifying round are Mlada Boleslav, of the Czech Republic.
Woods had only 15 players available for this match and must have been relieved to see goalkeeper Matthew Towns declare himself fit after picking up a slight injury during training. Ivan Woods was back in the fray following a hamstring injury.
Ton Caanen, the AEK Larnaca coach, made six changes to the team that played at the Hibs Stadium last week as he opted give some rest to some of his regular starters including Cameroon winger Priso Doding who was named among the subs.
It was Larnaca who controlled the exchanges right from the outset but they had to wait until the 26th minute to break the deadlock.
The Cypriot side were awarded a free-kick when Pavlou was fouled just outside the area. Pavlou picked himself up to fire a shot past Floriana keeper Towns.
The Greens tried to hit back and they twice came close to an equaliser but efforts from Pablo Doffo and Thomas Paris missed the target.
After the interval, the match continued to offer little scoring chances with Larnaca's Luke Dimech coming close on 61 minutes but his shot was pushed away by Towns.
