Ten-man Floriana battled their way into the quarter-finals of the U*Bet FA Trophy when they battled past a resilient Mosta side 1-0 at the Centenary Stadium yesterday.

The match turned out to be a hard-fought encounter with Mosta offering stern resistance to their more-quoted opponents and their hopes of causing an upset were boosted on the hour when Floriana were reduced to ten men when striker Daniel Nwoke was dismissed after a clash with William Camenzuli.

Floriana had created the best chances in the first half but could not find a way past Mosta goalkeeper Jonathan Debono. Mosta improved after the break and could have snatched the winner through Victor Osobu and Gilbert Martin but after regular time the two teams were locked at 0-0.

Extra-time was needed and scoring chances were at a premium. The match came to life in the final stages when Floriana forged ahead on 118 minutes when Christian Caruana’s inswinging cross found Dragomir Draganov who stabbed the ball past Debono.

However, there was more drama as a minute later Mosta were awarded a penalty when Martin was floored in the area by Saidi but Kane Farrugia saw his shot from the spot saved by Saidi.
