In 2010 the government is expecting to start working on an EU-co-financed flood relief project costing around €57 million.

Answering a parliamentary question by Carmelo Abela (PL), Resources and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino said the project would include various works primarily aimed at relieving flooding problems in several localities around Malta, as well as creating a new infrastructure with a storage capacity of around 200,000 cubic metres (44 million gallons) of rainwater.

A tender has just been awarded for an environmental impact assessment, cost benefit analysis and technical detail work for the project.
