A third floor apartment in Mosta was devastated in a fierce blaze on Saturday evening.

A seven-year-old boy and a 54-year-old woman were in the apartment when the fire started but quickly exited the building upon realising there was a fire.

Firefighters from the Civil Protection Department were called to the building at the corner of College Street with Spring Street.

Both the boy and the woman were taken to Mater Dei hospital and treated for possible smoke inhalation and shock.

A thick plume of smoke was seen over a wide area.

The boy was hailed for saving his grandmother by TVM, who said he had led her away from the flames, but the family would not comment when asked by this newspaper yesterday. Police investigations are under way.

In another blaze yesterday, a 31-year-old woman from Żabbar was seriously injured when a four-metre long boat caught fire at a garage in Marsascala.

The incident happened at about 11am in Triq id-Daħla ta’ San Tumas, the police said.

A 30-year-old man, also from Żabbar, was in the garage but was unhurt.  The blaze was put out by fire-fighters of the Civil Protection Department. The boat was heavily damaged.
