Recommendations for the application of a derogation from the EU Birds directive to allow the sustainable hunting and trapping of turtle doves and quails in April and May have been submitted to the Ornis Committee by the Hunters’ Federation.

In a statement, the federation (FKNK) said it held several meetings locally and in Brussels and Paris in the past months to come up with its proposals, which the Ornis Committee should be passing on to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister has to announce how the derogation is to be applied after March 4.

The proposals primarily deal with the manner in which the derogation should be applied, and how to attain a higher level of sustainable hunting and trapping on the Maltese islands.
