A petition by trappers appealing to the government to apply a derogation and allow finch trapping next autumn is to be put on the Table of the House by Labour MP Michael Falzon at tomorrow’s parliamentary sitting.
The FKNK said in a statement the petition was signed by 8,237.
They said in spite of several promises and guarantees before EU membership that trapping would not stop completely and although the European Commission had told the government that it could apply a derogation to permit trapping, the season remained closed for the very first time last autumn.
The signatories called on MPs to consider all routes, including the several suggestions and proposals made by the FKNK, to correctly apply a derogation to permit traditional trapping for finches in a limited and controlled manner next autumn.
This should be done for Maltese trappers not to feel inferior to other trappers in EU member states.
