The FKNK hunters' federation said today that whoever shoots protected species does not merit membership in the federation and should not be permitted to hold a hunting license.

It was reacting to the shooting on Sunday of at least two protected White Storks. The government yesterday said it would raise the fines for those convicted of such crimes.

"The FKNK would like to make it clear to its members, that today, more than ever, whoever commits such crimes, is unwelcome within its fold and has no place in a civilized country. These illegal acts, apart from being repulsive to the general public, are being used by the anti-hunting lobby against all licensed bona fide hunters and trappers who are thus being placed in one basket, besides undermining the efforts of the FKNK," the federation said.

"Whilst the FKNK unreservedly condemns such illegalities, it simultaneously strongly appeals to its members, to report to the police, any illegal activity involving the targeting of protected bird species that they might witness."

It said that those individuals who persisted in defying the law were tarnishing the name of the Maltese and Gozitan hunters and trappers and making it more difficult for the FKNK to work towards the safeguard and promotion of hunting and trapping in a credible manner.
