Five rockets slammed into the southern Israeli resort of Eilat today but there were no immediate reports of casualties, army radio reported.

Israeli police confirmed that a series of explosions had taken place in Eilat but could not confirm a rocket attack.

"There were a number of explosions heard in and around Eilat," police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld told AFP.

"As yet, nothing has been found on the ground," he added.

The radio said at least one of the rockets had landed in the sea.

Meanwhile, a Grad-type rocket also smashed into a street in the Jordanian port of Aqaba, injuring four people, one seriously, the interior minister said.

Two cars were wrecked in the blast, which occurred near the Intercontinental hotel, Interior Minister Nayef Qadai told AFP.

"A Grad rocket fell in the street in Aqaba, near to the Intercontinental hotel, destroying two cars and injuring four people, one of them seriously," Qadai said, adding that he had no further immediate information.

Information Minister Ali Ayed said in a radio interview the blast occurred at around 7:45 am.

Israel's army radio earlier said five rockets slammed into the Israeli port of Eilat, less than 10 kilometres (six miles) from Aqaba, causing no casualties.
