Five workers were killed and 18 injured at a construction site in Shanghai for a car park being built to support a new metro line, Chinese authorities said today.

Shanghai's Work Safety Administration said a concrete structure at the car park in the eastern district of Pudong collapsed at about 9pm local time on New Year's Eve.

Chinese state media said the cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
