A group of fishermen working in the northern Tumbe region of Peru made a big find at the weekend - an enormous stingray which local media have reported weighs one tonne.

The ray was found in the La Crove cove in northern waters near the border with Ecuador.

The area is roughly 1,280 km to the north of Lima. The one-tonne, eight-metre-long stingray had to be transported by a tow truck.

Peru's marine authorities, IMARPE, have reportedly been in contact with the group of fisherman for information on their find.

Giant stingrays of this kind are an endangered animal, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
