Q: A few months ago, I bought a microwave oven. These past few weeks it started giving me trouble and is not functioning properly. When I took it back to the shop the salesman asked me for the receipt. I do not have it anymore. Can I still claim free repair or replacement? What are my rights?
A: A business is entitled to ask for proof of purchase before providing redress. The onus is on the consumer to establish when and where the item was purchased. This is why it is so important to keep your receipts.
However, if you paid for the microwave oven by cheque or credit card, cheque stubs and credit card statements can also be accepted as proof of purchase.
