A number of couples are already expecting their first babies after IVF treatment provided by the government at Mater Dei Hospital, Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia said this evening.

He said that 120 couples had been referred for IVF treatment since the service was introduced in October 2013.

A prioritisation committee had set the order of precedence on the basis of age and the first 50 were given treatment, free of charge other than for the medicines.

The couples did not pay for the IVF treatment itself and the cryo preservation.

Some couples were already expecting their babies Dr Farrugia told Censu Galea in reply to a parliamentary question.
