A French doctor has become the first person to fly solo across the frozen North Pole-in a hot air balloon.

Jean-Louis Etienne soared high above the icy terrain for eight days, conducting atmospheric tests along the way.

His chilly 3130 km voyage from Spitsbergen, Norway to Alaska was detoured due to bad weather and he was forced to end the trip in Bagatai, Russia, instead.
