The opening games from the second round of the APS Bank Cup competitions were played last weekend at Tal-Qroqq.

From the men's qualifiers, Kavallieri chalked up their first points of the season while Aloysians Express and La Salle kept marching on in the women's competition.

Kavallieri opened decisively with four goals as Luxol found it hard to get going. They tried to react though and goals from Kevin Casaru and some fine saves from Daniel Tanti kept them in contention.

But, Kavallieri were always in control and despite closing the first half leading by a single goal, victory was never in doubt.

Goals at both ends maintained the balance in the initial stages of the second half but then Kavallieri scored four times with no reply to move 17-11 ahead.

Luxol ran out of ideas and Kavallieri won the match 26-16.

The Kavallieri girls fell three goals short of surprising Aloysians who held on to a close 18-15 win.

This game was tight with both teams taking some time to settle down. The last ten minutes before half-time, however, were all in favour of Aloysians as they opened up an 11-6 lead.

Kavallieri looked better in the second half and with only five minutes to go both teams were locked on a 14-all score.

Aloysians had Sarah Scicluna tightly-marked but near the end they profited from Kavallieri's mistakes to shift the balance in their favour.

Against La Salle, Luxol Living Well tried hard not to let their opponents run away with the game. They only reached their goal by the half-way mark as La Salle just led 5-3 at the break.

But with Stephanie Desjardins and Yvonne Barry on court for the second half, La Salle seemed more creative and efficient, going 12 goals in front at one point. A late rally from Luxol made the final score look more respectable at 19-11.
