Marlene Formosa and Yamen Bakry became the first ever couple to tie the knot in a wedding officiated by a mayor yesterday in Gozo.

The law allowing mayors to preside over weddings was introduced some two years ago but nobody had made use of it since.

After the ceremony held in the morning in the local council offices, San Lawrenz Mayor Noel Formosa said he had been following the couple closely.

He emphasised that they were committed to each other and that they will be preparing to have a Christian wedding in the near future.
