Last Saturday’s fireworks were let off 212 metres away from the locker room that caught fire at the Marsa Sports Club, the St Sebastian Fireworks Society said in a statement.

The society said it lets off fireworks from this place on January 20, Easter, and the feast of St Sebastian in July each year in line with a 49-year contract the government reached with the Marsa Sports Club in 2002.

Police permits were obtained to let off fireworks and this was done according to regulations.

The society said it gave a full and detailed programme to the secretary of the Royal Malta Golf Club to inform members not to be in the area when fireworks are to be let off.

The place was cleaned by the Golf Club against payment by the fireworks society.

The society said it had its own version and reservations on Saturday’s incident but it wanted to be prudent since there was a magisterial inquiry going on.
