A fierce fire broke out this morning in a large cold store belonging to Paolo Bonnici Ltd in Cross Street, Marsa.

Six fire engines were on the scene, with the operation made difficult for the firemen because of heavy smoke. Some of the firemen wore smoke protection masks and breathing equipment.

People on the site said the cold room is used to store chocolate, cheese and other confectionary products. None of the 40 people or so in the store at the time of the fire were injured.

The blaze was noticed at about 8 a.m.
