A yacht was extensively damaged by fire in Grand Harbour tonight.

The blaze was reported at about 10 p.m. close to the Freedom Monument in Vittoriosa. A nearby boat promptly towed the burning boat out into Dockyard creek between Vittoriosa and Senglea, preventing the flames from spreading to other yachts.

The AFM's rescue vessel Melita I was deployed and quickly doused the flames. The 40-foot yacht was then pulled to Senglea Point where Civil Protection Department fire engines were waiting.

An inquiry is under way.
