Finland's Satu Makela-Nummela won the Olympic gold medal in the women's trap shooting with a nail-biting victory over Zuzana Stefecekova, of Slovakia, at the Beijing shooting range yesterday.

American Corey Cogdell won a dramatic four-way shoot-off for bronze. All three rivals for bronze missed the target before Cogdell stepped up and fired off a shot that just chipped off a small piece of the orange target.

"It's unbelievable," said Makela-Nummela, 37, who finished with 91 targets, two ahead of Stefecekova.

China's Liu Yingzi failed to qualify for the six-woman finals despite being the favourite for gold. She had dominated the field at the 2007 world championships but was the latest victim of the enormous home expectations for Chinese shooters.
