A 28-year-old Dutch business man was fined €116.50 (Lm50) after pleading guilty to selling kitchen utensils without being in possession of a business licence

Pedro Bertmeu Escoda pleaded guilty to selling kitchen equipment and utensils without a business licence on and before January 24. Defence Lawyer Martin Fenech told the court that his client had been put under arrest, made to stay in prison overnight and was treated like a criminal for doing nothing.

Mr Escoda told the magistrate that he was kept for 20 hours in custody, just for not being in possession of the right permit.

Magistrate Michael Mallia said that the arrest was excessive and handed Mr Escoda the fine.

Police Inspector Ian Abdilla prosecuted.
