The Sliema local council has submitted an application to develop a three-storey underground car park beneath the playground adjacent to It-Torri.

The planned car park would add 180 parking spaces to the locality and would occupy the same footprint as the current recreational area, the council said, with the playground reinstated on the roof of the car park.

The project is one of a number of policies aimed at alleviating parking problems in the locality.

The council said that it aimed to finance this project through Commuted Parking Payment Scheme funds, to which developers contribute when they cannot provide parking spaces. The council said it had also applied for the legal title to this site, known as Margaret Mortimer Garden, which is currently owned by the government.
