While many of the world’s financial services locations saw a sharp decrease in employment numbers in the last year, Malta witnessed a substantial rise in finance sector employment, up by almost 1,000 new jobs, between September 07 and September 08. The figures are revealed in the third quarter 08 Labour Force Survey by the National Statistics Office.

The total number of jobs in finance rose to 6,190, representing 3.8% of the national workforce. The industry now employs 3,195 men and 2,995 women.

Employees in financial services enjoy the highest average earnings of any sector in Malta, with average annual pay of €18,156.62.

The figures released are for financial intermediation services only and do not include increased employment in related professional services and business activities which have also been expanding significantly over the same period.
