FIFA are to look into reports that plastic bottles were thrown onto the pitch during Australia's World Cup Group D match against Ghana.

Supporters of the Socceroos are reported to have thrown the bottles on to the field at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg as the sides drew 1-1 yesterday. It is understood that none of the bottles struck players, and landed on the athletics track around the pitch.

FIFA head of media Nicolas Maingot said: "The issue here is safety. Bottles must not be thrown and in this case we will look at it."

Australian federation spokesman Rod Allen added: "We don't condone that sort of behaviour no matter how frustrating a match has become.

"Our fans usually are very good, they travel round the world but if somebody threw something then we absolutely condone that sort of behaviour at any stage."
