Fewer Maltese went abroad in April, according to figures published by the National Statistics Office.
The NSO said 22,574 trips were made that month, five per cent less than in the same month last year.
Trips to EU destinations made up 87 per cent (19,553), a drop of six per cent. Trips to non-EU destinations remained practically unchanged.
Italy and the UK continued to be the most popular destinations for the Maltese and shared 55 per cent of the total tourism market. However, there were marginal declines for both destinations compared with 2011.
The number of Maltese going abroad between January and April stood at 85,822, almost at par with last year.
