The number of people being caught overspeeding by speed cameras was down by practically 50% in the first quarter of this year, figures issued in Parliament show.

Whereas 8,532 were fined for going beyond the speed limit between January anf March last year, the total in the first three months of this year was 4,075.

The camera at the Regional Road, St Julians, caught out most drivers - 1,797 in the first three months of last year and 1,048 in the same period this year. The camera on the Hal Far Road in Gudja caught out 3,530 between January and March last year and 912 in Jan-March this year.

The figures for the other speed cameras between January and March this year were Burmarrad Rd (St Paul's Bay) 247; Birkirkara Bypass 1 (the camera had just been installed); Notary Zarb Street, Attard, 229; Qormi Bypass (both directions) 74 and 138; Mdina Road, Qormi, 75, and 24;Mdina Rd, Zebbug, 123 and 721; St Andrew Street, Pembroke, 483.
