A strong southerly wind which whipped up high waves in Marsaxlokk has halted shipping activity at Malta Freeport.
A spokesman said ships had been unable to enter or leave the port since 4 a.m. and activity is not expected to resume before tomorrow afternoon. Three ships are currently waiting outside the harbour.
Meanwhile a number of fishing boats in the bay slipped their moorings during the night but prompt action by their owners prevented serious damage.
The sea was calmer this morning, although seawater was still flowing onto the street.
Sources said the rough sea had also damaged fish farms off Marsaxlokk.
The bad weather is expected to persist for the coming days although the wind is expected to veer to the North.
