Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant Manchester United can recover from a miserable week that has seen his side knocked out of the Champions League and replaced at the top of the Barclays Premier League.

The Scot wants an immediate response against Blackburn on Sunday when they could replace Chelsea, who are on FA Cup duty, in pole position.

Although England striker Wayne Rooney is doubtful after aggravating an ankle injury, Ferguson remained positive despite losing on the away goals rule to Bayern Munich and Carlo Ancelotti's side at the weekend.

He said: "Three disappointing results in a row isn't something we're used to.

"But it's happened and we've had to face this many times before. Bouncing back is in the nature of our club and is part of our history."

Blackburn have a fine home record, losing only twice in the league, but Ferguson added: "We've got five games to go and we need to win them, starting on Sunday."

The fight to avoid the drop is just as tight as the title race with Hull entertaining fellow strugglers Burnley.

Clarets boss Brian Laws, whose team have lost 12 out of their last 14 league games, has moved to quell talk of dressing room unrest.

Laws said: "I can't influence what's going on on the outside. If people are putting rumours around like that, there is nothing I can do about it."

Despite a point at Everton, West Ham remain in trouble and come up against a striker in Sunderland's Darren Bent who has not given up hope of finishing the league's top marksman.

He has scored 22 goals in the top flight, which has left him trailing Rooney by four and Didier Drogba by three.

Bent said: "There are only five games left for me to get enough goals, but as long as I keep going, then I will give it a go."

Manchester City hope to cement fourth spot when they meet Birmingham on Sunday - Liverpool face Fulham on the same day - with manager Roberto Mancini keen to finish the season in style.

He said: "We must concentrate 100% because we have six games that are very difficult. "

Meanwhile, Stoke manager Tony Pulis hopes influential striker Ricardo Fuller will recover from an ankle injury in time to face Wolves on Sunday.

Pulis said: "Ricardo is still bit sore. I will speak to him on Saturday and see how he feels."
