Ferencvaros have initiated talks with Andrè Schembri’s representatives over a contract extension for the Malta forward.

Schembri has been one of Ferencvaros’s star players this season, his inspirational performances earning him cult status among the club’s fervent supporters.

Speaking to The Times from Ferencvaros’s training base in Romania, Schembri, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, confirmed that the club are keen to retain his services.

“Ferencvaros are talking to my representatives,” Schembri said.

“That’s all I can say at this stage as discussions are on-going.”

The 24-year-old joined Ferencvaros in February last year after an unhappy spell with Austrian side SK Austria Kaernten but injuries prevented him from making his mark for the Hungarian club in the second half of last season.

Spurred on by a desire to prove himself after regaining his fitness, Schembri not only forced his way into the first team but quickly established himself as a key player after a string of excellent showings.

Schembri’s scoring exploits – he has netted eight goals, including two hat-tricks – sparked speculation that clubs outside Hungary may attempt to sign him during the January transfer window.

“I’ve been told that some clubs have made enquiries about me,” Schembri said.

“However, I must stress that I’m very happy with Ferencvaros.”

After ending their winter commitments with a 3-2 defeat away to Paks on November 30, Ferencvaros will resume their league campaign on February 26 with a home match against Kecskemet.

Ferencvaros currently occupy fourth place in the table, level with Debreceni and Paks on 28 points, eight adrift of leaders Videoton.

The long winter break in Hungarian football meant that Schembri and Malta goalkeeper Justin Haber enjoyed a few weeks off before reporting back for training on January 10.

The first-team squad headed to Romania earlier this week for a training camp where the focus is on physical conditioning.

Ferencvaros will return to Budapest at the end of the week but they plan to hold another training camp overseas later this month.

According to Schembri, who has been shortlisted for the Sportsman of the Year accolade at the SportMalta Awards – L-Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali, Ferencvaros may return to Malta but they are also considering other destinations, including Croatia.
