The opening round from the eighth Fenston Cup at the Royal Malta Golf Club was played recently at Marsa. The competition, which attracted three new sponsors - Gala Supermarket, Timeshare and Nappa Bar - was first played in 1995. In that year, Greta Fenston donated the trophy and was also one of the sponsors of the competition.

Seven teams are contesting the Fenston Cup which is played on Sundays between October and May. The format varies as there are four Stableford rounds and two bogeys. There are prizes for the top three at the end of the season and also monthly awards for the best golfer and team.

Fifty-eight golfers took part in the opening round. The best individual score was that of Helena Salmon - a 44. The second highest score, 40, was that of Anne Van Den Bossche. The winning team was Sapori.

Round one: Sapori 186 (7); Cassar & Cooper 177 (6); Gala 173 (5); Timeshare 171 (4); The Golf Shop 169 (3); Playmobil 169 (3); Nappa 154 (1). Round 2 will be played on November 17.
