Roger Federer will vie for his seventh Gerry Weber Open title on Sunday after reaching the final courtesy of a straight-sets victory over fourth seed Kei Nishikori.

Federer has been a prolific figure in Halle for over a decade, having won the title six times and been a runner-up twice, and he will compete in his ninth final in 12 years after dispatching Nishikori 6-3 7-6 (7/4) in 73 minutes.

The second seed needed just one chance to claim a crucial break and wrap up the first set, and appeared on course for a clinical victory when Nishikori dropped serve early in the second set.

Nishikori rallied to force a tie-break and although the Japanese claimed a mini-break to move 4-2 ahead, Federer came roaring back and won the last five points to seal his passage into the final.

He will face Alejandro Falla in the showpiece encounter after the Colombian hit back to see off home favourite Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Falla, 30, lost the opening set and was a break down in the decider, but the underdog came back on both occasions to claim a 5-7 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 win in two hours and 22 minutes, and now has a chance of earning his first title on the ATP Tour.
