A Planning Authority hearing will take place this morning to determine whether Dock 1 at Dockyard Creek, Cospicua waterfront will be turned into a public open space.

If the permit is approved it will see Dock 1, the first drydock built by the British in the Mediterranean, being opened to the public for the first time in generations.

The development application proposes hard and soft landscaping works, including demolition of the boundary fence and ancillary structures.

The intention is to open the enclosed dock and quay area and integrate it with Cospicua's two main squares, Gavino Gulia and Paolino Vassallo.

St Theresa church's parvis will be upgraded and the regatta club's façade will be redesigned.

The historic profile of the dock will be restored and a bridge spanning its entrance is also proposed.

New parking facilities will also be provided along the sides of Santa Tereża and San Lawrenz streets.
