The Queen was held up as a fashion icon by designers and models gathered at a Buckingham Palace reception for the British clothing industry.

In a subtle floral print outfit, the Queen rubbed shoulders with the likes of Twiggy, Sophie Dahl, Erin O'Connor and Zandra Rhodes - all of whom had nothing but praise when it came to the 83-year-old's dress sense.

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, was also given a tour of cutting-edge clothing and accessories by up-and-coming designers at the event.

Prince Philip spent some time examining a military-style jacket covered in gold Swarovski crystals with accompanying helmet and skinny trousers.

Its creator Katie Eary said: "He asked me 'Who would wear it?'. I said musicians and rock stars and he replied 'Glitzy'."

The Duke of Edinburgh was also amused that most of the displays - all by graduates from the Royal College of Art - were designed by people born outside the UK.

"You are supposed to be supporting the British fashion industry, and not one of them," he said before Ms Eary corrected him by stating that she was British.

Earlier, the young designer said she was an admirer of the Queen's fashion sense.

"I really like it. It is quite conservative, but I like it."

Asked what she would do if she was ever given the chance of dressing the Queen, Ms Eary said: "Just tailor it, a bit more waist. All women need a waist - I hope she won't be offended by that."

But the general consensus among the assorted fashionistas was that the monarch carried off a stylish look.

Ms Dahl said: "The Queen is my icon in general. I have embraced her use of matching shoes and handbag since I was 16."

True to the model's word, the Queen's Angela Kelly box jacket and dress outfit was offset with matching black handbag, shoes and gloves.

"I think she looks marvellous," Ms Dahl added.

Twiggy was similarly full of praise: "She is so pretty. I always think she is beautiful, her mother was beautiful."

The model added: "She is a fashion icon. Over the years she has worn some beautiful clothes."

Zandra Rhodes said she believed the Queen was "above fashion", adding that it was now down to the younger generation of royals to lead the way in clothing.

Among the 350 or so guests were other greats from the British fashion industry, including Jeff Banks, David Bailey and Elizabeth Emanuel.

Unfortunately, Dame Vivienne Westwood, who appeared at the palace in 1992 in a revealing outfit, was unable to attend the event due to ill health.

A spokesman for the designer said: "All I can say is that she is poorly and she is at home. She has a bug."Matt Williams, PA
