Farsons CEO Louis Farrugia has been appointed chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority, taking over from Sam Mifsud, the government said yesterday. The government hailed Mr Farrugia's knowledge and experience, which he gained through many years at the helm of one of Malta's premier business organisations.

Mr Farrugia, who takes over on January 1, would be an asset in 2010 as Malta's tourism industry geared itself to beat the international economic recession and return to growth, the government said.

Mr Mifsud has been appointed advisor to Tourism Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco. He will continue to advise the government on route development strategy.

Mr Mifsud has led the MTA's board since September 2006. He was instrumental in bringing a number of organisational changes within the MTA and in enticing airlines to start operating new routes to Malta, the government said.
