David Farrugia saw his chances of a bronze medal at the Pescara 2009 Games blown away when he was beaten in a play-off for third place in Raffa singles yesterday.

Farrugia lost a decisive match against Turkey's Caner Makara 12-2 to finish fourth overall, still considered a prestigious result for the Maltese player considering the list of top bowlers who took part in the competition.

The events for individuals, men and women, were dominated by Italy and San Marino teams who contested both Raffa finals yesterday.

Malta won a bronze medal in bowls at the Mediterranean Games ten years ago, in Bari. On that occasion David Farrugia partnered Joe Demanuele in doubles and finished third.

Also yesterday, Christopher Camilleri made his debut in the Games after taking part in the men's K1 1,000m kayak race.

He was sixth in his morning heat in 4:03.150 but qualified for the nine-man semi-final from which three other finalists had to be determined.

Camilleri improved his timing to 3:58.400 in the second race but despite his effort he still fell out of contention after finishing in fifth place. The last slot in the final went to Greece's Matthaios Syrigos, 3:50.310.

This morning, Camilleri takes part in the shorter K1 500 metres race.

Meanwhile, lack of wind again forced organisers to cancel some of the sailing races which were on schedule yesterday.

In Laser Radial, Maya Podesta is currently 13th overall despite a creditable fifth place yesterday.

The regatta comes to a close today with gold medal favourite, Sophie Turckheim, of France, still enjoying a comfortable lead.
