High-rise buildings could be considered but should be based on a master plan, independent MP Marlene Farrugia said yesterday.

Speaking during the adjournment, Dr Farrugia said that such developments should not take place to enrich speculators but to ensure citizens would have a good quality of life.

Referring to a recent meeting of the House Business Committee, she said the government had accepted the need for a master plan and the need not to consider high-rise development applications prior to the compilation of such a document.

Yet an application for high-rise structures in Mrieħel was being considered, she added.

Dr Farrugia said that if the government had enough land to sell to speculators, then there should be no issue in offering subsidised rent for social cases.
