The top performers in the 2009/10 competitions, organised by the Malta Football Association, are set to be honoured during this year's Melita Malta Football Awards which will be held on June 2 at the Grand Hotel Excelsior.

Details of the ninth edition of the contest were revealed by Sandro Micallef, chairman of the organising committee, during a press conference yesterday.

He said the 17 categories that were held last year were all retained.

The voting panel will nominate the best player in all positions on the field of play from the ten Premier League teams. They will also vote for the most promising youngster, the best coach, foreigner, local player, top veteran and the goal of the season.

The best players from other categories, namely the first, second and third divisions, the women's league and futsal will also be honoured along with the leading player in the GFA Division One.

"We never dreamed of reaching the ninth edition of the Football Awards but we're delighted to be here again," Micallef told reporters.

"This event brings together all those involved in local football - players, coaches, administrators and journalists. We shall all celebrate for the hard work we put in throughout the season."

Micallef said this year the public will be given the opportunity to vote for the best goal of the season.

"We have shortlisted the best goals scored during this season's Premier League," Micallef said.

"Journalists will trim the list to five best goals before the voting process gets underway on the awards day. Viewers of the show will then have the opportunity to choose the best goal via sms (50614914)."

It was also confirmed that a Special Recognition Award will again be included among the list of awards this year.

This goes to a local football personality with a distinguished career over the past years.

The Malta Football Awards will be broadcast live on Melita Sports 702 and Promotion Channel. The evening will be compered by former Malta goalkeeper Saviour Darmanin and sports journalist Catherine Micallef.

Also present for the news conference yesterday were Ludovigo Micallef, the MFA vice-president, Kunsill Malti għall-iSport chairman Bernard Vassallo, Alison Bezzina (Melita), Norbert Grixti (Grand Hotel Excelsior) and Alan Cutajar (Events Services).
