I refer to the item Witness To Tragedy Calls For Action To Avoid Repeat (April 16).

The picture accompanying the text gives the wrong impression that the boy was killed by a loose stone falling from the cliffs. That was not the case unless, at least, there was another tragedy.

The incident mentioned by Carol Ellul was a most unfortunate freak incident which no one on earth could possibly foresee and prevent. In fact the child was playing on the sand in a safe spot, away from the water but near a sort of ridge about two metres high which is made up of a mixture of semi-solid sand, clay and soil. A part of this ridge gave way under the weight of an Austin utility van which was parked there and killed the boy. I know because I was there.

As for the danger from falling stones from the cliffs above, nothing can be done to prevent accidents for the very simple reason that the whole cliff is coming down. I am referring to the path leading to the boathouses on the left. In fact the cliffs are broken up into thousands of large and small boulders and every now and then some of these boulders decide to obey the laws of gravity.

Even the boathouses themselves are very, very dangerous. Some years ago about 20 metal crash barriers were placed along the path with several warnings of falling rocks. These barriers were thrown into the sea that same week and many of them were carried away by the waves.

Twanny Bonavia, a blogger, most probably thought that I mentioned these barriers to defend the government and without checking the facts, he said that I must have been dreaming because he never saw one single barrier. I have pictures showing the barriers.

Asking the authorities to take steps to prevent accidents is a simple waste of time because nothing can be done except to declare the whole area out of bounds. And that is physically impossible.
