Premier League side Falkirk, who lost 1-0 to Rangers in last season's Scottish FA Cup at Hampden Park, have made their debut on the continent with a place in the Europa League.

The Bairns of the Falkirk Stadium, who this season are managed by Eddie May, became the 19th club to represent Scotland in European competition.

Their baptism was short-lived, however, as they were eliminated by Leichtenstein minnows Vaduz in the second qualifying round. After building a 1-0 lead at home and Ryan Flynn going down as their first scorer in the continent, Falkirk lost the return leg 0-2 to bow out 2-1 on aggregate.

Hereunder is a rundown of the baptism season of Scottish clubs in Europe.

First British bow

The first British club to take part in a European competition is Edinburgh club Hibernian.

The British pioneers though made their baptism by invitation in the earliest UEFA tournament, the European Cup, after they had send a telegram of support to the European ruling body and were offered the chance to compete in 1955.

Turnbull (twice), Reilly and Ormond were the first British scorers in Europe as Hibernian beat Roth-Weiss Essen (East Germany) 4-0 away in their debut encounter on September 14, 1955.

Their continental excursion continued thus: Quarter-final: Home vs Djurgaarden (Sweden) 3-1; Away 1-0. Semi-final: Away vs Reims (France) 0-2; Home 0-1.
