Falcons 17
Kavallieri 10

On a grey morning, the wet conditions seemed to hamper the Kavallieri's efforts to advance into their opponents' territory while the Falcons soared over the muddy pitch to control possession for most of the first half.

It was a tense start to this decider with both sides trying to put pressure to gain an early lead.

In the last minute of the first half, the Falcons won a scrum and their scrum-half Claire Casha directed a well-timed pass to Marion Azzopardi who fended off two tackles and made a decisive run for the first try of the match. Captain Daniela Casha converted for a 7-0 score.

Kavallieri were not giving up and in the dying seconds of the first half, they won possession through some clever rucking. Amanda Cassar dashed over the line for a try to bridge the gap to 7-5.

In the second half, both teams moved into top gear with the backs producing some fast running with the ball and many long passes.

Falcons player Beverie Sultana was fired up to carry the ball and hit at pace with the support of Vanessa Attard and Brenda Cutajar for a quick try near the corner flag.

In the last two minutes of the game Kavallieri were charging hard and came close to scoring a try but Martina Vassallo denied Charlene Vassallo from running over the try line.

Eventually Falcons took the upperhand as their forwards gained possession to pass a quick ball to the backs and set up Sultana for the try that gave them a 12-point lead.

Kavallieri were brave in keeping possession and their persistence paid off when Cassar intercepted a pass and charged her way over the try line to set up a tense finale.

With a few seconds left on the clock, the game was high on excitement with Kavallieri fighting hard for possession but the Falcons kept their composure to protect their lead until the final whistle and secure the 2009/2010 ladies' league title.
