The Wild Birds Regulation Unit yesterday launched for public consultation a series of proposals on draft legislation governing falconry.

Falconry involves activities related to the rearing, training and flying of birds of prey, including for the purposes of the hunting of quarry species.

There were no specific legal provisions regulating falconry, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights said yesterday. The proposed legislation would provide a regulatory framework for the practice of falconry to ensure it is carried out in line with national, EU and international law on the conservation of wild birds.

Feedback can be submitted either via an online consultation form available on www.socialdialogue.gov.mt or by sending an e-mail to wildbirds@gov.mt. The closing date is December 9.
