All 27 employees at FAL Malta Ltd have been given notice of termination of their employment after the parent company decided to close its Malta plant.

Employees at FAL Malta Ltd, which was set up in 2001 were told late on Friday evening that the parent company had decided to wrap up its Malta operations in view of decreasing orders.

FAL Malta Ltd, which produces wireless technologies for mobiles and cars, is a subsidiary of the German company Falcom Wireless Communications GmbH which was founded in 1990.

Speaking to The Times Business, employees said last Friday was a normal day at work until the company's general manager called an urgent meeting informing them about the decision.

They said their orders had decreased drastically since around October last year but the management was hoping that this situation would improve by March this year.

Some of the employees have home and car loans and some are getting married this year.

A company spokesman confirmed yesterday that the parent company had decided to suspend its operation in Malta and production has been suspended immediately.

He said the 27 employees have been handed their notice, the longest period being 10 weeks. The company saw a heavy decrease in orders due to the prevailing financial crisis. The spokesman said the company, which operates from the Mosta Technopark, is presently in discussions with Malta Enterprise about the matter.
