A container with 7.6 million counterfeit cigarettes was seized by the Customs Department last week.

In a statement today, the department said the container left from China and was on its way on Libya. The container's contents were declared to be carrying sandles.

At the Freeport, the container was opened after customs officials were not satisfied with what the container scans were showing.

A spokesman for Customs said that several containers full of counterfeit goods, including toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, soap, ink toner cartridges, satellite receivers, DVD players and mobile phone accessories were seized on their way to Libya in the past three years.
