Lewis Hamilton has won the Japan grand prix and consolidated his position at the head of the formula one championship ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg, who came second and is second in the championship. Sebastian Vettel was third.

The race started behind a safety car in the rain but had a long relatively dry part before the rain got heavy again.

The race was stopped several laps short of the finish after a crash in which Marussia's Jules Bianchi was injured.

Bianchi skidded and crashed into a recovery truck which was on its way to recover a Sauber which crashed into a fence moments earlier. According to initial reports he was unconscious.

The win was Hamilton's eighth of the season and he leads Rosberg by 10 points with four races remaining but double points in the final round in Abu Dhabi.

Daniel Ricciardo came fourth today with McLaren's Jenson Button fifth.

Ferrari did not score any points, with Alonso having retired with a technical problem and Raikkonen finishing 12th.
