Pietà Hotspurs vs Mqabba (today at 3 p.m., National Stadium).

This match is no more than a formality as Pietà and Mqabba are already doomed to playing Division One football.

Motivation is in short supply at these two clubs after both failed to put up a fight to avoid the drop but Carmel Busuttil and Bobby Giorev, the respective coaches of Pietà and Mqabba, will have done their best to lift their players' morale ahead of their remaining matches in the top flight.

With only two points separating Pietà and Mqabba, the two sides are expected to give their all to avoid the wooden spoon in this season's Premier League campaign. Set in this context, the significance of their direct clash today is higher than initially thought as Pietà would go five points clear of Mqabba if they emerge victorious but a win for the latter would take them one point above the Hotspurs.

Results so far: Pietà vs Mqabba 6-1, 5-0, 0-2.

Marsaxlokk vs Birkirkara (today at 5 p.m., National Stadium).

The race for second and third positions in the league standings is no longer the done-and-dusted affair it looked to be up to three weeks ago.

Sliema Wanderers' mini-revival in gaining back-to-back wins for the first time in the Championship Pool and the recent wobbles endured by Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk have added a touch of uncertainty to the fight for a top-three position.

Marsaxlokk and Birkirkara know that victory from their head-to-head encounter this afternoon would strengthen their chances of claiming the runners-up spot and a place in the UEFA Cup next season.

As the champions have a two-point lead over Birkirkara, they would surely make a significant step to holding on to second spot and keep their slender title hopes alive, at least for another day.

Coming from two defeats on the run, Birkirkara have their eyes fixed on victory to return to second spot and to keep clear of Sliema.

Marsaxlokk, who suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Wanderers last week, are still hampered by the absence through injury of midfielder Gareth Sciberras (eye) and Trevor Templeman (knee). Another central midfielder, Peter Pullicino, is ruled out by suspension while Cleaven Frendo is rated doubtful.

Birkirkara coach John Buttigieg must make one change in attack as Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza has received a one-match ban. Midfielder Antoine Zahra is also set to sit out today's match as he is still struggling to shake off the knee injury he sustained in the second half of Birkirkara's 2-1 upset to Valletta.

On the plus side, Adrian Ciantar has rejoined his team-mates for training after recovering from injury and could be in the squad.

Results so far: Marsaxlokk vs Birkirkara 0-2, 3-1, 1-2.

Sliema Wanderers vs Ħamrun Spartans (tomorrow at 3 p.m., National Stadium).

Successive wins over Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk have raised Sliema's belief that they can muster a strong finish to an otherwise disappointing season. Having also resurrected their bid for a UEFA Cup spot, Sliema will fancy their chances of maintaining their winning momentum when they meet Ħamrun Spartans tomorrow.

Sliema coach Stephen Azzopardi returns to lead his team from the dug-out after seeing out a one-match ban in the 1-0 win over Marsaxlokk. Etienne Barbara also returns from suspension while defender Jeffrey Chetcuti is available after his four-match ban was reduced to two on appeal.

Marco Gerada, the Ħamrun Spartans coach, also welcomes back four players who missed the 2-1 upset to Floriana. These are captain Ryan Fenech, Bratislav Timotic, Steve Meilak and Neville Galea.

Results so far: Sliema vs Ħamrun 3-0, 1-1, 2-0.
