Following the impact of the Deepwater Horizon disaster off the US coast, the Maltese Government will be keeping a close watch on BP's drilling for oil in the Mediterranean for Libya.

This was said by Resources Minister George Pullicino in Parliament in reply to a question by Labour MP Owen Bonnici.

Minister Pullicino said that every type of oil exploration brought with it environmental risks. It would be the joint responsibility of the competent Libyan authorities and the companies drilling for oil to see that the most rigorous practices would be used to protect against environmental impact in oil exploration and production.
