I am quite perplexed at the new bid for internet safety for children. I wonder why there is no fuss made about the constant barrage of bad news on the television and the media in general, and not much comment in the press or by the authorities about violent cartoons.

Go to any cartoon channel and the majority show some form of violent behaviour. Tom and Jerry might seem harmless but some parents note that the cat and mouse are always hurting each other! Some Palestinian boys might be given a toy gun to play with but do we realise that what we present as normal to our children is not being questioned? We should demand programmes with a less violent content. After all, we want to have a less violent society.

Should toys that promote death have a "violence" tax attached to them? Perhaps not, but the authorities should protect our children from other things that are not limited to the misuse of the internet.
