The Alpha course is a basic introduction to the Christian faith - held over 10 weeks - through a series of fresh, fun yet thought-provoking sessions in a warm, welcoming environment. The next edition of the course will start on Thursday at 7.30 p.m. at the Ibraġ parish basement.

The course is free and open to people of all ages, whether single, in a relationship or married, whether they are lapsed Christians or newcomers to the Church, are searching for answers to life's pertinent questions, still question God's relevance in today's world, or simply want to learn more or brush up on the basics of their faith.

Each session tackles a different question such as 'Who is Jesus?', 'Why did he die?', 'Why should I pray?', 'Why should I read the bible?', 'Does evil exist?', 'Does God heal today?', 'How does God guide us?', 'What about the Church?', and 'What about my faith?'.

Participants are split into smaller groups, depending on their ages and language preference, and discuss their views on the topics. Participants are also encouraged to raise questions and discuss issues relevant to their lives.

Each session ends at about 10 p.m.

Half-way through the course, participants also spend a weekend away to explore questions on the Holy Spirit such as 'Who is the Holy Spirit?', 'What does the Holy Spirit do?', and 'Can I receive the Holy Spirit?'.

What makes the course different is that the environment is informal and friendly, uses everyday language and allows participants to explore whether the Christian faith is relevant to their lives.

The course is run in 163 countries and has been translated into over 62 languages. There are now almost 32,000 Alpha courses running all over the world and it is estimated that over 12 million people have been on an Alpha course. In Malta too, hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds have already attended the course since it was first held in Malta over 10 years ago.

The course's introductory session, consisting of the viewing of a one-hour DVD presentation by Alpha course developer Nicky Gumbel, was held last Thursday.
