I have been told that ID cards issued to foreign nationals will all expire on March 30 this year, even if they carry a later expiry date.

Before this date, all foreigners living in Malta must apply for new documents for ID and residency.

Having e-mailed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and been redirected to the Citizenship Office about 10 days ago, I am awaiting details of what needs to be done, where and when.

ID cards are needed for changing utility contracts, visiting the hospital, going to the doctor.

My Maltese friends know nothing of these changes, we therefore assume that there have been no reports in the press.

Can the Department of Information, or anyone else, help throw any light on this issue?
