A team of psychiatrists appointed by a court to examine the alleged killer of a number of cats and dogs in Mosta have reported that the accused cannot be held criminally responsible since at the time of the crimes he was in a state of mental agitation. 

Nicholas Grech, a 37-year-old engineer from Mosta, was accused of animal cruelty in March after a long series of animal killings, with cats and dogs having been found crucified in various parts of Mosta.  He is currently being held at Mt Carmel Hospital.

Psychiatrists Ethel Felice, Peter Muscat and David Cassar said that Mr Grech had been suffering schizophrenia  and did not have criminal intentions.

It also appeared that at the time when the crimes were committed, he had stopped taking his medicines.

In view of the experts’ report, Magistrate Carol Peralta said he would hand judgment on Thursday.
