Heritage Malta is currently hosting the first solo exhibition of emerging local artist, Ġulja Holland, at the Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu.
Running till May 22, Altered Egos showcases the artist’s latest work, which examines the theme of identity through a dynamic combination of paintings, ‘photo-paintings’, digital prints and collage. Holland’s work is concerned with representing identity as a tangible extension of one’s outward appearance. The works combine photographic and painted code in an attempt to fuse these outward and inward dimensions of the self in a compelling and dynamic manner. The Opening night was inaugurated by Konrad Buhagiar, architect and associate professor at the University of Malta:
"By depicting the varying facets of her own image as in a splintered mirror, Ġulja Holland’s new collection of works explores the artist’s changing identity. In so doing, Altered Egos puts a finger on the pulse of a liquid society grappling with a world in constant flux."
Holland currently lives in Malta, having obtained a diploma in Art and Design at Loughborough University and a bachelor's degree in Fine Art from Leeds College of Art. She has recently exhibited at the Leeds College of Art degree show, The Free Rande degree show in London and the The Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale.
Altered Egos is curated by Justine Balzan Demajo and is open between 9am -4.30pm daily. Entrance is free.
